Counter height or bar height?

This is the one measurement to get right. Measure from the floor to the top of your worktop or bar, then look for a stool with a seat about 25 to 30cm lower. That leaves room for your legs without leaving you perched with your chin on the counter.

Not sure, or have more than one height in the house? A height adjustable stool, such as Brooke, Flynn, Owen, Pablo or Goose, covers a range of heights with a gas lift. The product page lists the seat height, or the adjustable range, for every stool. Where a title quotes a height, such as the Alassio and Modena 112cm stools, check the product page to see whether that is the seat height or the overall height.

How many stools will fit?

Allow about 60cm of counter per stool, measured centre to centre. Swivel stools and stools with arms need a little more. A 180cm island takes three stools comfortably. Leave a gap at the end so nobody is wedged against a wall.

Back, no back, or swivel?

• Backless stools, such as Finch, Goose and the Barlow backless stool, tuck fully under the counter and keep sightlines open.
• Stools with backs are more comfortable for meals and homework.
• Swivel stools, such as Brooke, Ella, Plump and Owen, make it easier to get on and off, and to turn and talk.

Finishes

You will find faux leather, velvet, fabric, PU leather, oak effect and metal designs. Faux leather and PU wipe clean easily after breakfast. Many stools are sold in sets of two, so check the title before ordering.
