How to choose a sofa bed

Measure twice. A sofa bed has two footprints: the sofa and the bed when it is open. Check the open length on the product page and make sure there is room to walk past, and that the coffee table can move out of the way. Then check your doorways and stairs for delivery.

Think about how often it will be a bed. For the odd visitor a year, comfort as a sofa matters most. If someone stays every few weeks, the sleeping surface matters more, and a guest bed with a proper mattress may be a better buy. Our article on sofa beds vs guest beds weighs it up.

Fabrics

Velvet looks rich and feels soft but shows marks where people sit, which brush out. Chenille and woven fabrics are hardwearing for a busy room. Darker colours like dark grey and blue hide marks well, while lighter shades such as dove keep a small room feeling bright.
