Types of dressing table

• Single pedestal: drawers on one side and open legroom, a good fit for a smaller room. See Mallory and Marlborough.
• Twin pedestal: drawers both sides for the most storage, also in Mallory and Marlborough, plus Richmond.
• Dressing table sets: the table and stool together, as in Camille, Lowry, Kendal and Curve.
• LED dressing tables: Signy and Sadie include lighting for doing make-up.
• Corner and dual-use: the Frances corner table makes use of an awkward spot, and the Bali 2 drawer table doubles as a desk.

How much storage do you need?

A table with one or two drawers holds daily make-up and a hairbrush. If you also keep jewellery, hair tools and skincare there, a single or twin pedestal gives you a column of drawers. Many tables come in the same finishes as the matching chest and bedsides, such as Maine in Dove Grey or Surf White, Lancaster in Cream or Grey with Oak, and Marlborough and Mallory in their own finish.

Stool and mirror

Check whether a stool is included: it will say so in the title. Maine, Manhattan and Marlborough sell the dressing stool separately, so you can add one or leave it out. If your table does not come with a mirror, add a wall mirror above it or a freestanding table mirror on top; our mirrors include folding and curved dressing table mirrors.

Where to put it

Natural light is the best for make-up, so near a window works well, side-on so you are not in your own shadow. Leave room behind the stool to pull it out and sit down, roughly the depth of the stool plus a little more. If the table will also be your desk, a wider top and a drawer for chargers and paperwork make sense, which is why the Bali 2 drawer table is sold as a dressing table or desk.
