Getting the height right

The most comfortable bedside sits roughly level with the top of your mattress, or a little below it, so you can reach a glass or phone without stretching or knocking things off. To check, measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, then compare it with the bedside height on the product page. A tall ottoman bed or a deep mattress may suit a taller 3 drawer bedside. A low bed or a floor-level frame suits a low bedside, such as the Alice Springs low 2 drawer cabinet or its floating bedside shelf.

Drawers, shelf or door?

• 1 drawer with a shelf: a lighter look with space for books, as in the Naia range.
• 2 drawers: the most popular choice, with room for the clutter that collects by a bed.
• 3 drawers: the most storage, and often taller.
• Door and drawer nightstands: a cupboard below for bulkier items, as in the Paris range.
• Floating shelf: no legs at all, which keeps the floor clear and suits a small room.

Measure the gap beside the bed too. Leave enough room to open the drawer and get in and out of bed comfortably, and check that the bedside does not block a radiator or socket. In a small room, a narrow bedside on one side and a wall shelf on the other can work better than a matching pair.
