Dining Room Furniture

Plan the room before the table

The most common dining room mistake is a table that fits the room but leaves no space to pull out the chairs. Allow about 90cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or piece of furniture, and around 60cm of table edge for each person. Our dining tables page has a seating guide by table size.

Then think about the shape:

• Round tables are sociable and suit square rooms and kitchen corners.
• Rectangular tables fit long rooms and seat the most people.
• Extending tables give you a small table every day and a big one at Christmas.
• Drop leaf and compact tables fold down when not in use, ideal for small kitchens.

Buy a set or mix and match

Dining sets take the guesswork out of matching a table and chairs, and are often the simplest choice. Mixing gives you more freedom: an oak effect table with upholstered chairs, or a ceramic top table with swivel chairs. Check the table height against the chair seat height, and if the chairs have arms, make sure the arms slide under the table top.

Storage and display

A sideboard keeps table linen, placemats and the good cutlery close to hand, and a display cabinet puts glassware on show. Many of our ranges include a dining table, chairs and a sideboard in the same finish, so the room looks planned rather than collected. Heaven covers ceramic, glass and marble top tables in round, rectangular and extending styles. Coxmoor brings oak or ivory and oak tables, chairs, benches and console tables together. Use the range cards above to browse each family.

Kitchen diners and breakfast bars

If you have an island or breakfast bar, see bar stools, and for a separate bar or drinks corner, bar tables and wine cabinets. Matching storage is in sideboards.
