How many people will it seat?
Allow about 60cm of table edge for each person. That gives everyone elbow room without feeling like a banquet. Use this as a guide:
| Table size | Seats comfortably |
|---|---|
| Round 80 to 90cm | 2 to 3 |
| Round 100 to 120cm | 4 |
| Round 140cm | 5 to 6 |
| Rectangular 120cm | 4 |
| Rectangular 140 to 160cm | 6 |
| Rectangular 180 to 200cm | 6 to 8 |
| Rectangular 220cm and over | 8 to 10 |
Many titles include the size, such as the Luca 80cm round table, Roxby round tables at 105, 120 and 140cm, and the Christo 220cm table. Legs matter too: a pedestal base or legs set at the corners fits more chairs than legs set inwards.
Extending tables
An extending table is the answer if you seat four most days but eight a few times a year. Titles give both sizes: the Bohol extends from 160 to 207cm, the Theia from 180 to 220cm, the Lyon small from 90 to 180cm, and the A-Line from 200 to 286cm. Camille and Montreux offer round extending tables. Plan the room for the extended size, with about 90cm clearance all round, even if you only open it at Christmas.
Small spaces
Drop leaf tables, such as Coast and Linwood, fold down against a wall when not in use. Square tables, such as the 75cm Coxmoor or the Malta ceramic square table, suit a kitchen corner.
Tops and finishes
Ceramic tops, found on many Heaven, Malta and Wicklow tables, are popular for kitchen diners because they stand up well to everyday use. You will also find marble effect, polished marble, clear and smoked glass, concrete effect, high gloss, and oak and walnut effect. Check the product page for exact materials and the table height.
Add matching dining chairs, or buy a ready-paired dining set. For storage, see sideboards, and for higher tables, bar tables.
