What to put in a hallway

A hallway has one job: deal with coats, shoes, keys and post before they reach the rest of the house. Most hallways only need two or three pieces to do that well:

  • Shoe storage: flip-down shoe cabinets, tall shoe cabinets and shoe benches you can sit on. See shoe storage.
  • Coats: freestanding coat stands, coat racks and clothes rails, plus wall racks. See hallway units.
  • A surface: a slim console table or compact sideboard for keys, post and a lamp. See sideboards and console tables.
  • Wall shelves: useful where floor space is tight.

Measuring a narrow hallway

Depth matters more than width. Measure from the wall to the edge of the door frame, the bottom stair or the radiator, then leave enough space to walk past with a bag of shopping. Flip-down shoe cabinets are a good choice for narrow halls because the shoes sit at an angle and the cabinet stays shallow. Check the depth on each product page before you order.

Also check where the front door swings. A cabinet behind the door can stop it opening fully.

Matching the hall to the rest of the house

Several of our ranges include hallway pieces, so the hall can match your living room. Lancaster has shoe cabinets, shoe benches and merchants chests in grey, cream, sage green and black with oak. Alice Springs has push-to-open shoe cabinets in colours from sand and taupe to sage green and night blue. Naia has shoe cabinets in white high gloss, matt black, cashmere and Jackson Hickory Oak.

Many sideboards and console tables here count towards buy any 3, save £75, taken off automatically in the basket. Check the product page to see if a piece qualifies.

If you are short on space everywhere, our guide to space-saving furniture for small rooms applies to hallways too.
