Start with the sofa, then plan around it
The sofa is the biggest thing in most living rooms, so fix that first and let everything else follow. Measure the room, mark the sofa footprint on the floor with masking tape, and leave walkways of about 60 to 90cm. Our guide to choosing a sofa that fits your living room covers the measuring in detail.
Once the sofa is placed, the rest is about proportion:
- Coffee table: roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, with about 45cm of legroom between them. See coffee tables.
- TV unit: at least as wide as the screen, ideally a little wider. See TV units.
- Lamp tables: close to the height of the sofa arm, so a mug or lamp sits within easy reach.
- Storage: a sideboard or bookcase on the longest clear wall keeps clutter off the floor.
Matching ranges or mix and match
Many pieces here belong to a named range, so you can buy a TV unit, coffee table and sideboard in the same finish without hunting around. Lancaster, for example, comes in grey and oak or cream and oak and covers TV cabinets, lift-up coffee tables, nesting tables, merchant chests and sideboards. Alice Springs offers push-to-open TV cabinets, sideboards and bookcases in a run of colours from sand to sage green. Use the range cards above to see a whole family at once.
If you prefer a collected-over-time look, keep one thing constant, usually the wood tone or the metal colour of the legs, and vary the rest.
Finishes you will find here
The collection covers oak effect, walnut effect, high gloss, painted two-tone finishes, rattan effect, and tables with glass, ceramic or marble effect tops. Product titles name the finish, and each product page lists the materials and dimensions, so check there before you order if a specific material matters to you.
Small living rooms
Lift-up coffee tables, nests of tables and corner TV units earn their keep in a tight space. Tall, narrow bookcases use height instead of floor area. Our tips on furnishing a small living room go further, and if the room doubles as a guest room, a sofa bed is worth a look.
