Match the unit to your screen

TV sizes are measured diagonally, which tells you very little about how wide the set actually is. As a rule, choose a unit at least as wide as the TV, and ideally 10 to 20cm wider on each side so the screen does not look as though it is about to fall off. Typical widths for standard widescreen TVs are:

Measure your own TV including the stand, because some stands sit near the edges of the screen and need a deeper top. Several of our units state a width in the title, such as the Galicia wall units at 120, 150 and 180cm or the Toronto cabinets at 140 and 190cm. Some say which screen size they suit, such as the Troy and Alvin units up to 65 inch. Always check the product page for the maximum TV size and weight a unit takes.

Height and viewing comfort

The centre of the screen should be near eye level when you are seated. With a large screen that usually means a lower unit. If you are mounting the TV on the wall, the unit becomes storage underneath, so focus on drawers and doors rather than top space.

Corner units, storage and lighting

• Corner TV units, such as Lancaster and Boston, use a corner that would otherwise sit empty.
• Drawers and doors hide consoles, cables and DVDs. Alice Springs cabinets have push-to-open doors with no handles.
• LED lighting is built into some units, including Bohol, Galicia, Lyon and Wensley. You will need a socket nearby.
