Wood covers a lot of ground, so it helps to know what you are looking at. Each product title and page tells you which finish you are getting.

• Oak and oak effect: warm, natural-looking beds such as the Cotswold, Bergamo, Amsterdam and Belton. Oak effect gives the look of oak grain, usually for less.
• Solid pine: the Pickwick, Poppy and Barcelona Pine. The Sami comes unfinished, so you can wax, oil or paint it yourself.
• Painted: white, ivory, grey and anthracite frames such as the Maine, Venice, Luna and Salerno shaker beds.
• High gloss and modern: the Manhattan, Naia and Paris, which suit a sleek, minimal room.
• Pattern and texture: rattan panels on the Padstow, Fleur and Sydney, chevron on the Milo and herringbone on the Harrison.

Storage built in

Several wooden beds lift or open. The Padstow, Bali, Madrid, Maine, Merida and Fusum come as ottoman storage beds, while the Bali, Maine and Sydney bookcase beds put shelves in the headboard, which is handy if you have no room for a bedside table. Sizes and looking after wood

Most wooden beds come in UK double and king, with some in single, small double and super king. The Naia and Paris frames use European sizes (140 x 190cm, 140 x 200cm and 180 x 200cm), so buy the mattress to match. High foot ends look smart but add length, so measure your room first.
